Cultural Partnerships

Sister City affiliations exist between the city of Tuscaloosa and designated cities in Japan, Germany and Ghana. The program encourages exchanges between communities, predominantly in the areas of education and cultural enrichment. Both exchanges have developed into very strong friendships that have strengthened a mutual understanding in the areas of education, culture, economics and sports. Currently, Tuscaloosa enjoys sister city affiliations with Narashino City, Japan; Schorndorf, Germany; and Sunyani-Techiman, Ghana.

The Sakura Festival celebrates Tuscaloosa’s friendly ties with Japan and its sister city, Narashino City. The Festival is held each spring and celebrates fresh beginnings and the renewal of spirit that comes with spring.

Educational Resources

International Baccalaureate® offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools. Tuscaloosa’s IB Programme is one of 11 Diploma programs in Alabama. Tuscaloosa has been an IB World School since July 1995. Both a high school program and elementary school (primary years) program are available.
The Capitol School is the state’s only internationally-accredited school for children pre-K through high school. Across the 11 southern states, there are only 10 schools that have attained international accreditation, which ensures that all credits earned at The Capitol School are transferable to any accredited school throughout the world. Over the past decade, students from 57 different countries have been enrolled. Currently, one student in four was born abroad or has parents who are citizens of foreign countries.
The University of Alabama’s Capstone International Center
is compromised of:

English Language Institute (ELI), located on the University of Alabama campus, offers a program in English as a second language. Local industries have utilized the program to help company expatriates and their family members learn or enhance their English-speaking skills. The six levels provide intensive English language instruction in speaking and listening, grammar, reading, vocabulary development, and writing.

Capstone International Academic Programs (CIAP) provides support to the UA community through indentifying, Developing, and administering overseas opportunities. CIAP offers academically challenging programs for students which promote both academic and personal growth. CIAP is responsible for all UA’s global learning experiences.

Capstone International Services (CIS) provides essential services and innovative programs for international Students and scholars, enabling them to achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals. CIS fosters diversity and strengthens intercultural relationships throughout the campus and community by promoting understanding and respect for all cultures.
